Chapter Seven

“Not a date, my foot,” Molly muttered, as she rummaged through her closet for the hundredth time. “Just two friends sharing a meal,” she growled, diving into the bottom of her closet in search of her other elusive black high-heeled shoe. “In a pig’s eye.”

She’d been a nervous wreck all day just thinking about tonight. She’d popped so many antacid tablets her supply was almost gone.

Straightening from the closet, triumphantly holding her shoe, Molly slipped it on, then examined herself in the full-length mirror. The long-sleeved black silk sheath she’d put on had been purchased about ten years ago for a faculty Christmas party, but she hadn’t gained an ounce and had only worn the dress twice, so it still looked…presentable, she thought, chewing her lower lip in worry.

The black pumps were high, almost four inches, which not only gave her some height but made her legs appear longer and slimmer. Of course, the fact that she could barely walk in the darn things—she’d hadn’t worn such high heels in years—could cause a few nervous moments. So she practiced, walking around her bedroom to get the feel of them. It took a few turns before she finally felt comfortable enough to let go of the furniture and maneuver on her own.

Picking up a hairbrush from the dresser, Molly tried to coax some semblance of order into her auburn mane. Naturally tonight, her hair did exactly what it wanted to, in spite of what she wanted it to do. Freshly washed, it was still slightly damp from her shower, but she knew it would settle down once it dried.

She picked up one of her gold hoop earrings. It took several tries for her shaky hands to get the post through her earlobe. She improved slightly with the second earring, and finally she was ready.

Taking a deep breath, she surveyed herself in the mirror and couldn’t help the smile that curved her mouth. She wasn’t quite certain how she looked, simply because it had been so long since she’d gotten so dressed up, but she felt wonderful.

As long as she ignored the butterflies in her stomach.

“Just two friends sharing a meal,” she assured herself, as she’d been doing for the hundredth time ever since she’d woken up this morning. She hadn’t slept much all night, worrying about tonight. She’d been dead-tired all day, but determined to ignore who was on her mind and carry on as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening tonight.

Maybe it was because she hadn’t been out alone with a man in so long she wasn’t certain how to act. And it was incredibly intimidating. But this was Judd, she reminded herself as the doorbell pealed. Her friend. A man she trusted and cared about. They’d never lacked for something to talk about and were merely going to have a meal together, as they had numerous times.

Except Louie and Louisa had always been there.

Tonight for the first time they would be alone.

Oh, my word!

Her nervousness started again, and for a moment Molly considered pleading sick.
